Mental illness is a common cause for long term disability insurance claims.  Sufferers of mental illnesses can find even the most basic of daily functions and activities extremely challenging. Working at a job can prove impossible. Benefits are available if the claimant can establish that he or she meets the policy’s or plan’s definition of disabled, just as with a physical illness. However, most long term ERISA disability policies limit benefits to 12 or 24 months when the disability is caused by a mental illness. Under these provisions, benefits will stop after one or two years even if you remain totally disabled.
