What is kyphosis?

have-a-back-pain-free-day-mdn.jpgKyphosis is the normal convex curvature of the spine primarily affecting the thoracic region.  If the curvature is abnormal, it is known as hyperkyphosis.  Because the curving occurs in the upper back, the condition, left untreated, often causes a "hump" back or a "round" back and can lead to significant deformity.  It is unusual for cases of kyphosis to become too severe given modern medical techniques and generally adequate screening for spinal curvature problems.

Like scoliosis, the worst effects of kyphosis can be the interaction of the abnormal curvature with other medical problems or traumatic injury.  For example, kyphosis sufferers may slouch and have noticeable problems with their posture.  Many modern jobs require sitting at a desk in front of a computer.  Over many years slouching can cause significant back pain and discomfort.  Even people with normal spinal curvature eventually encounter problems and it can be much worse for individuals with kyphosis.

What causes kyphosis?

  • The aging process can lead to kyphosis as muscles weaken and the effects of gravity take hold.
  • Arthritis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis or other degeneration of spinal bones may cause abnormal curving.
  • Traumatic injury to the spine.
  • Degenerative disk disease may cause the spine to bend abnormally if the vertebral discs slip or are injured.
  • Infections in the spinal bone such as osteomyelitis may lead to bone loss and weakness that can contribute to abnormal curving
  • Certain tumors may cause weakness or degeneration of the vertebrae bones and eventual kyphosis

There are a large number of factors that can cause or influence the severity of kyphosis and if you are experiencing pain or discomfort in your upper back or neck, our New York Long Term Disability Lawyers can answer your legal questions and assist with evaluating your options. Even if you have already been denied disability benefits, we may be able to assist you.

What is the long term prognosis for kyphosis patients?

Treatment for most cases is generally very effective nowadays. Doctors and orthopedic specialists have an array of tools to correct hyperkiphosis and they can provide you with a plan to prevent further damage to your spine. The key is to address the underlying cause of the abnormal curvature and the degree of the damage that has already occurred.

Long Term Disability Due To Kyphosis

If you are having chronic pain in your upper back, extreme fatigue or difficulty breathing, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible.  Kyphosis that is a result of poor posture can only get worse as you age and it is wise to correct any ergonomic or posture issues that are affecting the way you sit or stand at work. Employers spend millions of dollars on ergonomics in the workplace in hopes of staving off conditions that will lead to disability and workers compensation claims.  Unfortunately, some people will still encounter problems with back pain and kyphosis and they will need the assistance of our New York Long Term Disability Lawyers.

Back injuries leading to disability are one of the most common reasons that people need income support from disability insurance. Kyphosis is not usually the direct cause of significant disability, but like scoliosis, it can cause discomfort, pain and lost productivity when it happens in conjunction with other serious conditions or injuries.
